Some common questions about problems with the sustain pedal, and possible answers:-

1. Why does my sustain pedal not work when I plug it in?

This may sound obvious, but check that you have plugged the pedal into the correct port at the back of your keyboard. Sustain pedal jacks are 6.3 mm in diameter, and share the same size as standard audio lead sockets (E.g. headphone sockets). The pedal should be plugged into the socket marked "Damper" or "Sustain Pedal". Check with your keyboard manual to make sure that it is plugged in correctly.

If this does not solve the problem, it is possible tbat you may be using the incorrect type of pedal. Refer to the page on sustain pedal polarity for more information on this.

If this does not fix your problem, then there may be something broken in the hardware of either the keyboard or the sustaining pedal. Borrow a friends keyboard (if possible). Now plug in their pedal to your keyboard. If this works (and it is the correct polarity), then you know that the problem lies with your pedal. If it doesn't work, then the problem could be related to your keyboard, not the pedal.

2. Why does my sustain pedal keep holding down the notes?

There are three possible reasons for this:-

a) You are using a pedal with the incorrect polarity.

b) MIDI error messages can cause notes to be held on. These can occur from notes played into a sound module or computer via a mother keyboard.

c) The sustain pedal cable may have become damaged.

3. My sustain pedal is working in reverse. For example, when I depress the pedal, the notes do not sustain. When I release the pedal, any keys that I play continue to sound and I can't stop them. How do I fix this?

This is almost certainly because you are using a pedal with the incorrect polarity.
